Weichai Power launched on September 16, 2020 in Jinan the world’s first commercial diesel engine with a core engine thermal efficiency of 50.23%, setting a new thermal efficiency benchmark for global diesel engines, just like the first time in the history of mankind that a 100-meter sprint was completed in 10 seconds. Just 480 days later, Weichai set a new world record by increasing the base thermal efficiency to 51.09% just as a 100-meter run was completed in 9 seconds, further reinforcing the importance of China in the global internal combustion engine industry.

The thermal efficiency of the base engine of 51.09% is another important revolution of the traditional engines, as well as a technical preparation for the implementation of the “China VII” emission standard. The first batch of Sinotruk hydrogen heavy duty tractor units equipped with Weichai’s high power hydrogen fuel cell systems are powerful, environmentally friendly, safe, reliable and efficient for full time use.

In 2021, the National Hydrogen Cell Technology Innovation Center, the only one of its kind in China, was created at the initiative of Weichai Power. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and Shandong have reached a framework agreement on the “Hydrogen for Every Home” technology demonstration project. Based on the center, the ministry carried out a multi-scenario demonstrative application of hydrogen energy in Shandong and accelerated breakthroughs in key hydrogen technologies and the development of the hydrogen industry, thus creating a duplicable Shandong sample for the hydrogen industry.

Since the launch of the “Hydrogen for Every Home” technology demonstration project, with strong support from MOST and Shandong, the National Hydrogen Cell Technology Innovation Center has set up an innovation consortium focused on Weichai Power and made up of ‘companies, universities and research institutes, to accelerate technical breakthroughs and industrialization, and successfully develop hydrogen fuel cell systems from 15 to 200 kW. Based on its highly reliable fuel cell products, Weichai Power has made a multi-scenario demonstrative application. Regarding hydrogen powered fleets, the first high power container type hydrogen fuel cell heating and power generation system and the oxide fuel cell heating and power system solid 30 kW, both the first of their kind in China, were put into service in Weifang; The company developed China’s first 3-ton hydrogen fuel cell forklift truck, creating a zero-carbon logistics handling environment. In terms of hydrogen-powered ports, China’s first 80-seat hydrogen fuel cell passenger ship developed by the company has been successfully tested with zero carbon emissions in Xueye Lake, Jinan; and the company launched China’s first heavy-duty hydrogen fuel cell truck demonstration project at Qingdao Port. In terms of hydrogen-powered highways, the company’s first Chinese highway hydrogen refueling station has entered service; A 49 t heavy fuel cell truck powered by Weichai traveled more than 5,000 kilometers between Taishan Steel, Jinan and the Dongjiakou area of ​​Qingdao Port. On October 27, 2021, a fully homemade, world-leading, Chinese-made Sinotruk Huanghe ski waxing truck with a Weichai 162 kW hydrogen fuel cell system was delivered for use during the Olympic Games in Beijing winter 2022. On January 4, General Secretary Xi Jinping inspected the ski waxing truck. A series of results show that the “Hydrogen for Every Home” technology demonstration project is moving from model to reality.

Tan said that the core engine thermal efficiency of internal combustion engines of up to 51.09%, the massive application of new energies in products and the “double driving force” strategy have enabled Weichai Power to keep a step ahead in the development of traditional high-end engines and new energy engines, and has opened a new path of diversified energy transformation within the framework of the national strategy of peak carbon and carbon neutralization.
