Toyota Fortuner SUV with mild hybrid diesel engine

Last year there were reports that Toyota was working on hybrid technology for its diesel engine. Now there are reports the new hybrid diesel engine could be used for the Fortuner and will go on sale in Thailand first.

The Fortuner Hybrid would be launched in 2023. Toyota is expected to use the 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV engine. There will be an integrated starter and a special alternator. The SUV would be able to store the energy lost during braking. Then this energy would be used to produce additional torque and help the motor when it is not at its most efficient state.

There will also be an idle engine start/stop system. Thus, the engine would stop when the vehicle is stopped. For example, at a red light or when the vehicle is stuck in traffic. The engine also restarts automatically when the driver needs to move the vehicle forward. It also saves fuel and reduces emissions.
