GM temporarily halts production of Flint-built 3.0-liter turbo diesel engine
FLINT, Mich. (WJRT) – General Motors has confirmed that production of the 3.0-liter Duramax turbo diesel engine built inside Flint Engine Operations is temporarily halted.
This specific engine is one of four engines that are built inside the factory. The Duramax 3.0-liter turbo diesel engine is an optional engine on certain GM, Chevrolet and Cadillac trucks and SUVs.
It is not known if engine production has already stopped or will stop. It is also unclear whether there will be any potential layoffs due to the shutdown.
This particular problem is one of the many problems that the auto industry faces right now, and likely for months, if not years, on the road.
“What we’re seeing is really a collision of – I’m just going to call it evils plaguing industries,” said Carla Bailo, CEO of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor.
Bailo has spent 42 years in the auto industry, so she has a really good feel for what’s going on right now and what’s likely to happen on the road.
“From the time you place an order until the time you bring these parts into the factory, it can take about 30 weeks, so even if we start restarting immediately, we’re going to have a bit of a lag,” he said. she declared.
It’s been seven months and two weeks. Which puts the calendar in mid-March. But Bailo knows the industry is far from returning to normal. Besides, what is normal these days?
“This is made even worse now by labor shortages. The other day Jim Farley spoke about 20% in the workshop everyday because of a pandemic, caused by disease, caused by people changing their minds about what they want to do. I mean we’re in a very volatile situation with the workforce now, ”she said.
And it extends beyond factories in terms of logistics, including the lack of workers in ports across the country and the lack of truck drivers mean parts can’t get to where they’re supposed to go. .
The main thing here, be patient. Getting back to some sense of normal before the pandemic is going to take some time.
