Chevrolet Unveils New 10.4L, 1,004 HP Crate V8 Engine, Most Powerful Ever

Chevrolet Performance surprised us all at the end of July when it unveiled its 572-engine COPO Camaro. With a displacement of 9.4 liters, it was the largest engine ever installed in a vehicle built by the Detroit automaker. It was awesome, but now something even bigger has come out. No, this is not a joke; Chevrolet has just unveiled a naturally aspirated 10.4-liter V8 engine that produces over a thousand horsepower.

It’s called the ZZ632 because of its 632 cubic inch displacement, and it’s as serious as crate engines. Forget Dodge’s 1,000-horsepower Hellephant crate engine, that’s four more without help from forced induction. Want more details? Well, we have them.

For starters, the crankshaft and connecting rods are forged steel, and the pistons are forged aluminum. The large bridge block itself is made from heavy-duty cast iron and features four-bolt main caps similar to the 572 Big Block in the COPO Camaro. It is topped by aluminum heads with symmetrical orifices, CNC machined at the factory and designed to allow identical flow to each massive cylinder. In some context, a single cylinder of the ZZ632 is the same size as the entire engine of a high-end Chevy Trailblazer.

The fuel that this engine uses is, compared to everything else, very normal. That’s a regular octane number of 93 that you can get at most gas stations. It is electronically injected at the ports, instead of being spat into the cylinders via a direct injection system. Combine that refueling with 12.0: 1 compression, a massive single-plane intake manifold, and a 7,000 rpm redline, and 1,004 horsepower does indeed seem very achievable, as does the 876 lb of torque. -pi of the motor.

With so much aftermarket support for the big block, one could no doubt push this engine well beyond that 1,004 horsepower figure, whether or not forced induction was used. 10.4 liters is a lot of displacement to work, and the fully forged lower end is definitely ready to take the trouble.

To be clear, though, it’s not really a brand new engine. Its cast is the same as the smaller 572, but the cylinders are bored 0.040 inch and stroke is increased 3/8 inch to recover the extra displacement. Chevy says the block also had to be modified to accommodate this larger stroke, and bespoke connecting rods had to be made as well.

The Detroit automaker didn’t offer a price for this impressive new beast of an engine, but a new 572 with 727 horsepower typically costs around $ 16,000. Expect the price for this new 632 to be in this area. And start to think of places to stick it.
