If your Uncle Walt likes to say “there’s no replacement for displacement” every time someone mentions turbo or supercharging, well, he’ll have another example to cite and support his point.

Just in time for SEMA, Chevrolet released a 10.35L big-block V8 engine capable of producing over 1,000 horsepower right out of the box. For all the old school runners, that’s a beefy 632 cubic inch.

But wait, there is more! GM says this engine will produce these types of numbers on Gas pump , not a savage fuel concoction known only to runners who communicated with Dale Earnhardt’s ghost via an oil-stained Ouija board.

Chevrolet’s dyno chart shows that about 600 of the peak 786 lb-ft of torsion comes in line at just 3,000 rpm, hitting a few revs later at 5,600 rpm. That’s a pretty flat torque curve for any engine, not to mention a displacement of over 10 liters. All horses show up for service at just 400rpm from the 7,000rpm red line.

To hit the dizzying displacement figure, Chevy hit it in terms of bore and stroke. The connecting rods and crankshaft are made of steel, although the pistons are made of aluminum. And just in case it needs to be said, this mill is meant for competition only, as it will likely break all emissions rules to tiny shreds.

This monster will show up in person at this year’s SEMA show in Vegas and is expected to be in the hands of customers – if not their cars – at the start of calendar year 2022. Bring your earplugs.
