2023 Toyota Fortuner bound for India to get mild-hybrid diesel engine

The next-generation Toyota Fortuner is set to launch internationally next year and will be available with a mild-hybrid diesel powertrain

Japanese auto giant Toyota is currently working on the next-generation version of the Fortuner SUV. The new model is expected to launch next year, first in Thailand and then regularly in select other markets around the world. The next-generation Toyota Fortuner will also make its way to India, likely a few months after its global debut.

Speculation about Toyota’s plans to electrify the Fortuner SUV has been circulating for a while, but now we have some concrete details about it. According to a recent report from Thailand, the next generation Toyota Fortuner will feature a mild hybrid system with its 2.8-liter turbocharged diesel engine. Power output has not been disclosed, however.

The mild-hybrid system is said to increase torque output during hard acceleration, and it will also include regenerative braking, as well as an idle start/stop system. This would help to significantly reduce fuel consumption compared to the current generation model, while improving overall performance. The report makes no mention of the gasoline powertrain; Toyota Fortuner is not available with a gasoline engine option in Thailand, and that will not change with the next generation model.

Interior of the Toyota Fortuner Commander

The next generation Toyota Fortuner has yet to be spied, so its design remains a complete mystery for now. The new generation model could have larger dimensions than the current generation model, with better interior space on offer. It will likely be better equipped than the existing version, with a much more premium cabin design.

We expect spy images of the next generation Toyota Fortuner to appear online in the coming months. Then we will have a better idea of the design and dimension changes. The current-gen model is available in different versions – standard version, Legender, GR Sport – and the next-gen model will probably have several versions as well.
